Founded in 1900, the Epée Club pre-dates the British Fencing Association (BFA) and in the early years was left to organise épée fencing. In 1901 it held an international assault at arms at Steinway Hall and on the following Sunday held a team competition at the Hurlingham Club where the Club still holds its summer pools. The Epée Club has provided the cups (on loan to the BFA) for nearly all the major épée competitions held in the UK – including the art nouveau “Les Armes de France” men’s individual trophy, the Savage Shield (Dr George Savage, 1904), the Ranelagh Cup women’s individual, the Grose Hodge for the women’s team event. Alexander Miller-Hallett presented a cup for International Competition in 1928. The men’s international A Grade that was originally the Challenge Martini became the Epée Club Trophy, the trophy being given to the Epée Club by John Glasswell for loan to the BFA.
The Epée Club has been continuously active since its foundation.

In this our 125th Anniversary year, the Epée Club continues to make history by holding the very first all-women’s poule at the Epée Club Cup competition. In previous years the women have joined the men in a combined poule unique.
Saturday 17th May 2025 saw two firsts in Epee Club history; firstly, there were more women members than men fencing in the Inns of Court Gold Cup at Hurlingham.
On Friday May 16th 2025, members and invited guests gathered at the Saville Club (Brook St.) to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Epée Club.
Our foundation: ‘On Tuesday 12 June 1900, a meeting styled “the first general meeting constituting the Epée Club” was held in the Savile Club, 107 Piccadilly with 29 founder members’.
It was the Epee Club women who led the way, for club members, in the medals table at last weekend’s British Veterans Nationals Competition
